[Film Review] Steven Universe The Movie

Steven Universe: The Movie is an American animated musical television film based on Cartoon Network's animation series Steven Universe. It premiered on Cartoon Network on September 2, 2019. Steven Universe: The Movie has many genres, namely fantasy, action, and adventure, but it focuses more on action.

This movie begins with an announcement from the Diamonds declaring it an era of peace, with no more conflicts between them and Earth. They then invite Steven to live with them on Homeworld, but he declines, believing Earth is the place suited for him; there, he is happy with his friends and family. Upon returning to Earth, specifically to Beach City—a (fictional) city located in Delmarva, USA—the city where he and his friends reside, Steven feels extremely joyful. He believes this happiness will last forever. However, all his expectations are shattered when a Crystal Gem he has never encountered before arrives seeking revenge; she intends to attack Steven and destroy Earth.

Steven—the main character in Steven Universe: The Movie—is voiced by Zach Callison. As an accomplished actor, Zach has also voiced for various other characters, including Prince James in Sofia the First and Billy Batson in Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam and Justice League: War. Despite being a voice-only performance, Zach effectively conveys the emotions of Steven. Similarly, DeeDee Magno as Pearl, Estelle Swaray as Garnet, Michaela Dietz as Amethyst, and Sarah Stiles as Spinel all deliver outstanding performances, making their respective voices memorable for viewers.

What stands out about this movie for me is how its plot is still related to the series. For example, when Steven wants to restore the memories of his Crystal Gem friends, he tries to remember how they became who they are now, which is explored in the series of Steven Universe. Unfortunately, this can also be a drawback of the movie, as not all viewers have watched the series, they may find the plot confusing.

The scene I like the most from this movie involves Steven and his Crystal Gem friends lying in a park after singing a song called Happily Ever After; they are feeling content and peaceful. Steven then asks Garnet if their current state of happiness will last forever, Garnet says "No". Not long afterward, Spinel—a mysterious Crystal Gem—arrives with her injector and attempts to attack Steven and his friends.

Overall, this movie is very entertaining and impressive. The debut of the villain character, Spinel, makes this movie more interesting because the viewers learn something that has never been mentioned in the series of Steven Universe, precisely the backstory of Spinel, who has a connection to Steven's mother. The songs in Steven Universe: The Movie are also very cute and pleasant to listen to. I give this movie ⭐⭐⭐⭐.

Oh, you can watch Steven Universe: The Movie on Prime Video, by the way!
